Did I reblog this already? #alwaysrelevant
this is the 2nd time i’m reblogging this today because i laughed just as hard as i did the 1st time i saw it
I have so much to do. And so little time to do it. So I’ll make it quick. I’ll make it very, very quick.
I found this exact version of this song on a tiny, terrible mp3 I’d downloaded from an Ears With Feet FTP in Iceland in 98 or so. I listened to it religiously and hid under the desk in the fake patio and sung along. Always comforted. Always cathartic.
I can’t believe there’s video of this.
And this is the first time I’ve found it.
During my winter of winters.
Your deathday to your birthday.
I miss you.
What a wonderful basket of frui…

TORI AMOS: “STRANGE LITTLE GIRLS” (2001)
BUT IT CAN’T JUST BE A COVER ALBUM, IT’S TORI AMOS!
So went much of the discourse surrounding this album when it was released, a collection of songs sung by men suggested by Amos’ friends, which she then re-interpreted from a female perspective. Where the project gained the caché it has is that Amos created a unique persona for each song and then dressed up as these ‘strange girls’ in a photoshoot for the album cover above. Some of the interpretations (Eminem’s ‘97 Bonnie & Clyde’ is a good example) give voice to female characters who are present in the song (here Bonnie’s murdered mother lying in the trunk) but not given their own voice.
Far from being percieved as a lazy water-treading contract pleaser, as cover albums often are, in ‘Strange Little Girls’, the singer is perceived as forging a unique authorial agency over the material she uses.
Amos later admitted in an interview that, at the time, she in fact was trying to free herself from her contract with Atlantic Records and was simply loathe to leave them with a set of new songs in their catalogue.
